The wellbeing climate is changing. Today, wellbeing is a topic that is firmly on the organisational agenda and is being incorporated into learning and development practices. But what do we mean by wellbeing and, as organisations, what can we do about it?
In this article, we will briefly overview the changing perspectives on wellbeing and then consider the changing climate of wellbeing research and practice, as it is being informed by the advent of positive psychology and other trends that focus on what is strong and what is positive – what is right with people.
We will introduce some of the emerging evidence for the role of positive emotions in high-performing teams, and then go on to explore strengths’ use as a key enabler of wellbeing. Finally, we will introduce the strengths approach as an organisational focus that is being employed by companies as diverse as Norwich Union, Yahoo and BAE Systems.
