BACKGROUND: Born into wealth and privilege, Eleanor Roosevelt was orphaned by the age of nine. In 1899 she was sent to an English finishing school, Allenswood Academy, and remained there until, aged 17, she ended her formal education and returned to the United States.

In 1905 she married her distant counsin Franklin D Roosevelt, but 13 years and six children later, she discovered he was having an affair. The marriage almost ended in divorce but it survived and she emerged a different woman – one who no longer defined herself solely by the wants and needs of her husband. Her work in furthering the causes of civil and human rights and equality for women would bring her fulfillment and self-confidence.
