Despite excellent skills and results, many individuals are victims of behind-the-scenes forces that obscure their visibility, credibility and organisational impact.

The word ‘politics’ has its roots in the Greek word for citizens or people, so being ‘political’ literally means to be aware of people, which isn’t actually a bad thing. But being political has negative connotations, such as self-interest, manipulating others and being economical with the truth.

However, being political by knowing your way around an organisation, its people and what is important to them, is a key contributing factor to your ability to get things done.
