Music can be a powerful learning tool, says Moving Performance director

Most challenges people face in an organisation when it comes to learning are emotional, not rational.
That was the view of Ben Hines, founder of change group Moving Performance, which facilitates learning and change in organisations using music.
Hines spoke at the Learning Technologies conference in London this week where he stressed that through music, leaders and their teams can engage in a wide range of business issues such as change, communication, leadership and emotional intelligence.
"The biggest challenge companies' face is how to get people to want to change and learn," he said.
"Music is an art form and it gets people to talk about how they feel - this could be extremely useful in the workplace when managers are looking to communicate better with their teams.
"At Moving Performance, we use music as a metaphor for business to express best practice and achieve high performance.
"One of the things that stand out most is the way that this art form can help to trigger change and cause an emotional shift in people's lives."
Hines said that this creative approach to learning can be critical for effective development and has encouraged leaders and managers to focus on emotional intelligence development.
"What I'm keen to stress is that music alone does not solve the problem but it can help the people in charge to change the way they approach things - the importance of listening is extremely powerful."

Fabulous! Music and performance are a powerful metaphor and dynamic to help shift organisations, their teams and their leaders. It offers a compelling model for 'how to do it'. Too many organisations attempt to solve its problems using 'old hat' ideas that unfortunately do not create a significant enough step change.
The more businesses out there offering this kind of intervention, the better. We have been using it for a few years now and it resonates every time we run a workshop or programme.
Great stuff Ben. Richard
