Kingston University, London has developed a new postgraduate Masters award in Career and Talent Management, which it will run from January 2008. The work based course is the first of its type to be offered by a UK university. The Masters award in Career and Talent Management provides HR, Learning and Development and Talent Management professionals with theoretical insights and practical applications used to successfully retain talented individuals.
Developed by career consultancy firm, Career Counselling Services (CCS), their Career Coaching and Counselling Core Competences programme gives the opportunity for individuals to be awarded academic credits leading to an accredited Postgraduate Certificate in Career and Talent Management qualification. The postgraduate certificate is gained through attendance at CCS’s five-day course and completion of a series of work-based postgraduate level projects of immediate relevance to both the student and employer.
Work-based learning is a way of gaining a nationally recognised postgraduate qualification for skills that are learned and applied in the workplace. Kingston University’s flexible learning agreement framework ensures that the particular needs of the individual student and employer are taken into account.
The course begins by registration with the CCS five day training course, which licences graduates to use a proven, practical approach to provide career management support in a wide variety of settings. Diverse organisations such as the Bank of England, BBC, Shell and the NHS have benefited from CCS’s programme, which has been running since 1996. The company has trained some 1500 Human Resources and Learning and Development managers since that time.
Kingston University’s introduction of the postgraduate certificate was in response to the growing significance of career development and talent management and the demand for evidence informed, high quality professional training in this area. The certificate is managed by the School of Human Resource Management which is a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Centre of Excellence.
