New minister for skills appointed

John Denham is the new secretary of state for skills, it has been announced this week.
He is also responsible for universities and innovation as a member of new prime minister Gordon Brown’s cabinet, which was unveiled yesterday (Thursday).
He is part of a two-man team heading the education department. Ed Balls is the secretary of state responsible for children, schools and families.
Alan Johnson, who was secretary of state for education under Tony Blair and who ran for the deputy leadership of the Labour Party, has been made health secretary.
The other cabinet members are:
Jacqui Smith – home secretary
David Miliband – foreign secretary
Alistair Darling – chancellor
Peter Hain – work and pensions secretary
James Purnell – culture secretary
Hilary Benn – environment, food and rural affairs secretary
Douglas Alexander – international development secretary
Jim Murphy – minister for Europe
John Hutton – minister for business and enterprise (formerly the department of trade and industry)
Jack Straw – justice secretary and Lord Chancellor
Des Browne – defence secretary
Shaun Woodward – secretary of state for Northern Ireland
Harriet Harman – leader of the House of Commons
Hazel Blears – communities and local government secretary
Ruth Kelly – transport secretary
Geoff Hoon – chief whip
Ed Miliband – secretary for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster
Andy Burnham – chief secretary to the Treasury
Baroness Ashton – leader of the House of Lords
