The National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is now a well established format for professional and technical workers to prove and confirm their competence. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, declaring an objective that every new candidate for any NVQ should be offered the opportunity to develop their portfolio of evidence for their NVQ through a web based ‘e-portfolio’ said: ‘QCA intends to be a champion for e-learning and e-assessment. We will drive the take up of learning and qualifications by new initiatives in e-assessment and e-learning.’
In response, Pragmatic Training Services of Wetherby and Sutton Coldfield announced a new e-portfolio service for NVQ candidates. www.nvqonline.co.uk was developed by NVQ candidates, assessors and verifiers. After being tested and improved internally over a two year period it is now ready for wider use.
Bob Debell, PTS Managing Director said ‘We think it is very important that any e-portfolio is totally user friendly, and reduces the level of bureaucracy associated with NVQs. I believe we have succeeded in developing a system that even candidates unfamiliar with computer operation and the ‘world-wide-web’ will be able to use with a little guidance at the start of their assessment. Candidates who have already used the e-portfolio to gain NVQs in Occupational Health And Safety At Work have been delighted with the simplicity of the portfolio building and the easy communication with their assessor.’
The assessor can access every candidate's portfolio from any computer with access to the web. Candidate and assessor can work together on the portfolio, each seeing the other's work without either of them leaving their own workplace. Audio and video digital recordings, including recordings of telephone assessment sessions can be instantly uploaded as evidence items and added to the portfolio. The nvqonline e-portfolio s available for use by colleges, training organisations, employers and other registered NVQ Centres.
