Learning and Development News - NCFE School Reunion

Saint Benedict Catholic School and Performing Arts College in Derby was officially awarded NCFE accreditation status during a visit by David Grailey, Chief Executive of the national awarding body. David, who attended Saint Benedict School (formerly Saint Ralph Sherwin School) until June 1983, formally presented Saint Benedict with the accreditation certificate, which enables the school to run a range of NCFE qualifications.  He was given a tour of the music technology and performing arts facilities before speaking to pupils about his time at the school and the new developments in areas such as music technology and performing arts.

Saint Benedict will now offer NCFE Level 1 Award Introducing Music Technology to more than 1500 pupils throughout the school. The qualification provides learners with the opportunity to explore the uses of music technology and provide opportunities for people to deepen and broaden their musical interests and skills. Candidates also study a diverse range of subjects including mixing sound, live sound, DJing, MCing, sound effects, audio editing and employment opportunities. Learners then produce final recordings using music technology skills through practical work to develop creative skills.

Marion Chester, Curriculum Director of Music, commented: “Saint Benedict Catholic School and Performing Arts College have been searching for a long time for a suitable Music Technology syllabus for Key Stage 4 students and the NCFE course matched our needs perfectly. The school was keen to offer this course particularly in light of current trends in music and music technology.”
