In his lecture, Our Nation’s Future – the role of work, the Prime Minister spoke of the need for greater work/life balance, and of the need for greater access to training and development for all, allowing for more fulfilling careers.
Referring to the Leitch report he outlined some of the steps that have already been taken to increase the nation’s skills. With over 1.5 million people now trained to at least Level 2, the Government has further initiatives planned including:
• The creation of a further 12 Skills Academies, to be operational by the end of next year;
• A Sector Skills Councils budget of £3 billion which will mainly be distributed through Train to Gain and Learner Accounts;
• Allowing reputable companies to accredit their own training.

Responding, Dr John Philpott, Chief Economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said:
“Mr Blair is to be congratulated on his aim to put work back at the top of the political agenda in an era when overall lack of work is less of a concern. By focusing on how to improve the quality of work in a way that can boost business and makes workers happier the Prime Minister has painted a vision of the future to which all can and should sign up.”
