Learning and Development News - Career opportunities for women receive £10m boost

A two-year Government scheme, based on the recommendations of the Women & Work Commission recommendations, will involve three Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) to help up to 10,000 women find new careers or progress their careers in sectors where they are currently under-represented.

The women, of all ages and from all backgrounds, will take part in projects designed to give them the skills and confidence they need to succeed in tradtiionally male dominated industries.  The scheme will include training and personal development programmes, mentoring schemes and female-only bursaries for technical qualifications.

This positive action could mean women participating in the workforce, and in higher grade roles, could boost the UK economy by between £15 and 23 billion a year.

Ruth Kelly, Minster for Women, welcomed \'these exciting projects\'.
