Learning and Development News - Increase in potential test dates for functional skills pilot

Edexcel, an awarding body for functional skills qualifications, is increasing the number of test opportunities for centres piloting the scheme.

The sessions, added in response to demand from schools wanting to integrate the qualifications more smoothly into their curriculum, are scheduled for January, March, May and November 2010.

Functional skills are practical skills in English, information and communication technology (ICT), and mathematics and form part of the government’s agenda to introduce the new 14-19 curriculum.

To ensure that functional skills are readily available to the full range of learners, the government is offering them as free-standing qualifications from Entry Level to GCSE equivalent Level 2 during the three-year pilot that began in September 2007.

The government’s education restructuring will create four learning pathways: the foundation learning tier, GCSEs and A levels, the Diploma and apprenticeships.

Additionally the reforms include introducing a new secondary curriculum, integrating functional skills across the curriculum, learning programmes and qualifications, introducing foundation, higher and extended projects into learning programmes for 14- to 19-year-olds, creating the qualifications and credit framework (QCF) and reforming vocational qualifications.

The government hopes the modernisation will ensure learning is effective, engaging and relevant to young people's lives as well as making it easier for learners and employers to understand the different qualifications.
