Top creative industry gurus are providing mentoring to 25 fast growing media companies in a scheme aimed at boosting the UK’s creative industry.
The project, headed by film producer and politician, Lord David Puttnam (pictured), aims to unleash the potential of the UK’s most promising advertising, TV and digital companies.
The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), who run the scheme, say creative businesses are crucial to the economy - contributing £57 billion a year to UK plc.
But a recent analysis from NESTA found that despite the sector expecting to employ 1.3mil people by 2013, over half of senior management had not had any business development training.
“Creative businesses are highly networked, but getting practical, intelligent advice on business growth, from people who appreciate their sector, is tough to find,” said Jon Kingsbury, NESTA creative economy director.
He said the programme was focused on innovative companies that would contribute to creative industries leading the UK out of recession.
The companies, which make up the Creative Business Mentor Network, were selected from hundreds of entries and each has been matched with an experienced mentor tasked with providing practical advice to develop the business.
The sector which includes TV advertising and computer game production is expected to grow on average at 4% over the next five years, more than double the rate of the wider economy.
