Learning and Development News - SMEs welcome merger of Train to Gain and Business Link

Moves to improve access to free training advice and support for employers during the recession have been welcomed by small businesses.

The Train to Gain skills brokerage service has joined with Business Link to simplify access to information for employers by offering impartial advice on what specific training could help businesses increase productivity.

The streamlined system, previously labelled overly bureaucratic, has been welcomed by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

“It makes it easier for small businesses to access training through the single web portal that has been adopted through the business support simplification process,” said FSB spokesman Marc Shoffman.

“Business Link brokers must have an understanding of the skills needs of the micro business sector and also raise awareness of the offer that is available – particularly the offer of wage contribution, or the actual cost of training, for businesses with fewer than 50 employees as there is a large under spend in this area.”

The government says that, by using the service, businesses of all sizes can receive free advice on how to develop their workforce.

“To succeed in a competitive global environment UK businesses need ongoing access to help and support,” said minister for business Ian Pearson.

“The Train to Gain skills brokerage service will provide targeted, free and practical advice for businesses, helping them to better develop a highly skilled and innovative workforce. Something which is even more crucial in the current economic climate.”

And Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills spokeswoman Lorna Fletcher added: “Employers can ring up a for chat with advisors who can provide local knowledge, the service is a good source of advice on available funding and training providers - with everything conveniently in one place.”
