Prisoners receiving “real work experience” to prepare them for re-entering the community have received a donation of electrical equipment.
Inmates at HMP Wolds, a category C training prison in East Yorkshire, participate in various education and work programmes to enable them to gain NVQs and an understanding of what will be required of them when they get jobs after being released.
Now they are able to get hands-on experience of electrical equipment installation thanks to ventilation products manufacturer Polypipe Ventilation, which has donated some fans and its FireBrake electrical conduit to the prison.
FireBrake is designed to stop fire spreading through electrical wiring systems.
HMP Wolds is run by G4S and holds 395 men. It aims to “normalise” prison life to reflect life in the community as much as possible. It also aims to prepare inmates for life outside through education and work experience, teaching them various vocational skills including electrical installation.
Chris Pittaway (pictured), electrical tutor at the prison, said: “At HMP Wolds we try to give prisoners real work experience which reflects the ethics required in business. This provides opportunities for prisoners to gain National Vocational Qualifications that help them find work on their release.
“We started the training scheme a few years ago and have been looking for manufacturers’ donations. With the generous donations of the fans and the conduit by Polypipe Ventilation, we are able to achieve this. It makes a huge difference to the training to be able to use actual products.”
