Learning and Development News - Training Journal conference and awards 2008

Organiser, Debbie Carter, editor of TJ was on hand, along with the rest of the TJ team to welcome the 200 learning and development professionals who attended the one-day event.

As well as keynote speeches in the morning and afternoon, delegates were able to choose from 12 separate learning sessions, some of which were delivered by old friends of TJ.  Cartoonist Graham Shaw was back by popular demand. Regular TJ Columnists, Dr Peter Honey, Garry Platt and Dr Mike Clayton also hosted sessions.  Other familiar faces included Lex McKee and Tony Bray.

In a day devoted to learning, during the lunch break delegates were invited to attend informal training sessions laid on by TJ’s sponsors.

The day was rounded off with a glittering awards ceremony hosted by the gangsta motivator himself, L Vaughan Spencer.

Speaking after the event Carter said: “This year conference was our third and each year it improves. The range and quality of speakers was good and provided the delegates with great learning opportunities.

“We started the day with a sobering presentation by the CEO of UK Commission for Employment and Skills, Chris Humphries on the state of UK skills, but from then on the day was upbeat with a wide range of workshops on offer; from cartooning and a live coaching session to transactional analysis and the future of L&D.

“We closed the conference with Professor Binna Kandola’s fascinating look at the nature of unconscious bias. Feedback from the delegates to me was very positive with many of them congratulating TJ on its focused workshops which have real learning embedded in their content rather the usual conference presentations which often act as a sales or promotional vehicle for a new book or product.

“Building on the success of this conference is going to be a challenge but I’m certainly aiming to give it my best shot for 2009!”

The full list of winners of the TJ awards will be published in the July issue which will be uploaded to the TJ Online site next week.
