Learning and Development News - Remedy for burns care skills shortage

The University Hospital of South Manchester has launched the first specialist professional qualification programme specifically for practitioners in burns care.

Its new Certificate in Professional Studies (Burs Care), which is validated by Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), will cover all aspects of burns care injury management during the course of one 30 week and two 15 week modules.

The course has been developed following a recommendation arising out of the National Burns Care Standards and a requirement within hospitals that 75 per cent of senior/specialist nurses must have formal training in burns care.

Before the launch of the programme staff either learned on the job, or undertook more formal learning only as part of a combined course for nurses working plastic surgery.
