The government is to accelerate the pace of development of higher education infrastructure and plans for up to 20 new universities or higher education centres be built or agreed to over the next six years. That equates to a further 10,000 student places and is in addition to 17 centres that have been built or had funding committed since 2003.
Reiterating the sentiments of a new government paper, New University Challenge, which was published on 3rd March John Denham said: “Never have universities and colleges been more important to our country both nationally in ensuring our success on the world stage and locally in our towns and cities through the creation of jobs and new skills, driving regeneration and enriching cultural life.”
