Learning and Development News - ConstructionSkills celebrates success in Apprenticeship Week

To mark England’s first National Apprenticeship Week ConstructionSkills is celebrating the 5,300 ConstructionSkills apprentices who successfully completed their apprenticeship in England last year.

ConstructionSkills will mark its involvement in over 40 years of apprenticeship placements by posting on its website (www.cskills.org/natappsweek - live from next week) a roll call listing all 2007’s successful apprenticeship completions. Many of the names will also be published in a bespoke supplement in the Daily Mirror this Friday (29th) to celebrate Apprenticeship week.

To complement this profile-raising activity ConstructionSkills apprenticeship team will attend recruitment fairs around the country and host events such as the West Midlands workshop ‘Getting the most out of your apprentice’

The week not only provides the opportunity to celebrate achievements and raise the profile of apprentices but also to remind employers of the vital role apprentices play in today’s construction industry and the support available to help them to offer apprenticeship placements. ConstructionSkills provide grant support to employers of up to £11,750 over the course of a 3 year apprenticeship and have a dedicated team which works closely with both employers and apprentices throughout the training period.

Max Hamps , Director ConstructionSkills Apprenticeships, says: “We are proud to support Apprenticeship Week. It’s a great opportunity to get people talking about the benefits of apprenticeships and to remind construction firms that taking on an apprentice gives you the unique opportunity to train someone to work in a way that fits your business.

“Many of the companies ConstructionSkills work with have been taking on apprentices for years now, and some are now in very senior positions in the company – so have provided amazing value for money in the long-term!”

The week has also received backing from leading Union officials who have urged supporting firms to take on more apprentices.

Bob Blackman, national secretary for construction UNITE, said: “I am a member of the Cross Industry Apprenticeship Task Force because I know the future of the construction industry is largely dependent on investing in our workforce and that must start with apprenticeship placements. I was encouraged by the optimism my fellow task force members voiced on the day and I am committed to helping to double the number of construction apprentices within the next four years. We cannot afford to fail. I hope campaigns like Apprenticeship Week will help us to reach employers and change the culture of training in England for the better.”

Apprenticeship Week, runs in England and is being coordinated by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and runs from 25 to 29 February. The Learning and Skills Council will be celebrating the achievements of apprentices across all sectors through events, interviews, web chats and activities underlining the real benefits of apprenticeships.
