Learning and Development News - Apprentice of the Year

Young apprentices from across the UK descended on London in the hope of being named National Apprentice of the Year 2007/08 at a special event organised by contractor Morrison Facilities Services.

Winners of the company's London & South East, Birmingham, Manchester, Gateshead and Scotland regional Apprentice of the Year awards all competed to be named Apprentice of the Year at the event on 18 January at the Regents Park Holiday Inn, London.

Sean King (22) from Yardley, Birmingham, came out top beating the four other contenders.  Sean, who is an apprentice plumber, has worked as an apprentice for over three years on responsive repairs on homes owned and managed by Birmingham City Council.

Sean won the award for his all round excellence and for demonstrating a strong commitment and positive attitude to work.  His award recognises his outstanding leadership skills and the judges were impressed with his provision of support for his colleagues.

"I was really surprised to win the award and I feel really proud," said Sean.  "I was also named as third year Apprentice of the Year in the regional finals so I feel I have really achieved a lot."

All regional awards winners and runners up were also entered into special recognition awards.  All nominees were assessed against criteria such as passion, commitment to learning, technical competence and customer care.

The winners were:

" Outstanding newcomer of 2007 - Lee Pearson (17) Manchester " Outstanding technical competence - Gary Oliver (20) Scotland " Outstanding skills - Jason Villanueva (20) South East " Outstanding customer care - Claire Jelly (19) South East " Mentor of the year - Tommy Wilkinson, Scotland.

Each award winner received a gift voucher from Wolseley UK to redeem against power tools or other equipment that will help them further their career.

Managing director of Morrison Facilities Services, Phillip Russell, commented:  "The awards provided the chance for us to recognise the talent and commitment of the extremely hardworking apprentices.

"Over the past three years Morrison has quadrupled the number of apprentices we have across the country.  This reflects our commitment to providing practical experience and vocational qualifications in essential trades such as plumbing and carpentry.  We want to make a difference to young people, and provide chances for people wanting to learn a new career, so that they can have more options to learn and develop careers."
