Bart Knols, MBA graduate from the Open University, is the winner of the MBA Student of the Year Award 2007. The announcement was made by John Peters, Chairman of the Association of MBAs and Jo Redfern of The Independent at the Association's 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner.
Knols, who has devoted his life to finding appropriate solutions to combat insect-transmitted diseases, in particular malaria, says that his MBA was crucial to achieving his goal. He told the audience "Diseases need to be managed - they cannot be controlled through science alone". He later added that he was "delighted to win the award and will use the achievement to open up doors to further his work".
The other three finalists were:
- Aimee Abott Cocco, from Instituto de Empresa Business School in the dominican Republic, who commented: "It is a real honour to represent my University in front of this audience of business schools and the Association. I am also very proud to represent my country and to show that a tiny country like mine can produce good people".
- Benjamin Haan, from Monash University, who remarked that "Being a finalist in this competition has definitely been worthwhile as it has contributed to me getting my dream job".
- Bjorn Dudok van Heel, from Rotterdam School of Management, who said: "It is a great honour to be a finalist in this competition. It has provided a platform to spread awareness of social and ethical enterprise, which is my area of work".
The MBA Student of the Year competition, sponsored by The Independent, is now in its 10th year. It rewards the achievements of outstanding MBA students from accredited business schools around the world.
