Unionlearn in the TUC Northern region celebrated the official launch of its commitment to promote the Skills Pledge to employers in the region, a recommendation from the much publicised and learning-focussed Leitch Review.
The Skills Pledge offers unions and employers an opportunity to demonstrate publicly a joint commitment to support the skills development of the entire workforce to a minimum of a full Level 2 qualification (the equivalent to 5 good GCSEs), including Skills for Life.
Unions are able to play a pivotal role in engaging and supporting learners in the workplace and the role of union learning representatives has greatly strengthened this role in recent years. The Skills Pledge will prove to be a high profile mechanism for unions and employers to promote joint commitment and action on skills in the workplace.
A comprehensive 'Skills Pledge Pack' was given to every member of the Regional Unionlearn Advisory Board (made up of union Regional Secretaries and Full-Time Officers) to begin the dissemination process and encourage buy-in across all unions, their reps and employers alike.
Barney McGill, Unionlearn Regional Manager said, ' It gives me great pleasure to be able to launch the Skills Pledge in our region, as it is a clear indication from the government that improving skills is high on the agenda. This is another fabulous tool to help us and our affiliate unions make a difference to our workers, our businesses and subsequently, the economy as a whole through the ever-expanding learning agenda.'
