Call of the Wild, a provider of management training, team building and corporate events, fought off competition from three other organisations in the same category to scoop the Team Building Award at the Welsh Tourism Awards ceremony in Bodelwyddan Castle, Denbighshire.
The organisation, based in the Brecon Beacons National Park, was among fourteen Welsh enterprises celebrated as being the very best of Wales’ tourism industry at the awards, dubbed the ‘Tourism Oscars’ and presented by Huw Edwards.
Call of the Wild was short-listed for the award after an undergoing an assessment by independent judge, travel writer David Atkinson, the author of the new edition of Lonely Planet Wales.
The company impressed the judge with its long term aim to have a positive impact on the local economy, having built up the business in just over ten years to employ 33 staff and become the biggest employer in the area.
Kevin Gould, corporate sales director at Call of the Wild, said: “It is testament to the efforts and hard work of the whole team here at Call of the Wild that we have won the Team Building award. Our aim has always been to create powerful learning experiences to help our clients to increase the productivity of their workforce through carefully structured management training and development programmes.”
Tourism Minister, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, said: “The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to the continual improvement of quality in the tourism industry. While these awards recognise the industry’s finest, I am very well aware that we must continually raise quality through such areas as investment and training. The tourism industry operates in an incredibly competitive market, where only the very best will do and where there is no room for complacency. The winners richly deserve the applause. They are all committed to quality and to continuous improvement. But all the finalists represented deserve recognition for playing their role in ensuring that visitors from all over the world enjoy coming to Wales.”
Two other companies that provide facilities and experiences for business travelers were recognised at the National Travel Awards. Eco Retreats won The Real Alternative Award, and Ynyshir Hall was awarded for Gold Star Accommodation. Both organisations are based in Machynlleth, mid Wales.
The National Tourism Awards and Showcase Wales is the flagship event in the Welsh tourism calendar, this was the first time for it to take place in North Wales. The awards night was the climax of a three-day event which also included Showcase at Venue Cymru, Llandudno. During the two days of Showcase, 250 international buyers attended a business-to-business event where more than 100 Welsh tourism firms sought to sell their products to prospective tour operators.
