In search of an expert

Good morning TJ, I work for the United Nations International Computing Centre. One of our customers involved in the IT area is asking for a managerial and leadership program to prepare its technical staff toward CIO type of role. We are looking for a consultant with expertise in IT managerial programs to conduct a needs analysis and design of the program. Any suggestion?

Franca, welcome to the forum and thanks for posting the question.  I'd love to help you find the right person for the work.  You know the outcome you want and that's a great start. 

A good coach might be what this person needs. 

They could help support their transition into the role and offer advice on how to plug any skills gaps they and the business identifies- a tailored TNA.  You might have a preference for a formal management and leadership development programme as part of the solution already.  A good coach specialising in leadership transition work should have experience and can advise on that too. 

A coach working alongside them will help maximise the formal training and put it into practice working through the challenges they face.  It's worth considering.

You don't say where you're based or whether there are any particular requirements from the person, so I can't be specific over who to recommend. 

If you want to get in touch directly with that information or post it on the forum, please do that, so we can all suggest a few people we know who might fit the brief.

Dear Franca

I immediately thought of two organisations and have been in contact with the people concerned to check their willingness to be put forward.

One of them is Rosie Miller and her colleague Eddie Maguire.  They run a company called ChangeWave which specialises in developing leaders to deal with today’s rapidly changing workplace environment.  They can offer you a combination of skills around leadership in IT.  To declare an interest, I have worked closely with them both:  Eddie was a coaching client of mine when he was in a senior IT leadership role and before he joined Rosie in their consulting business;  Rosie and I have also worked alongside each other on a number of leadership projects, and I contributed to Rosie’s leadership manual “Are you a Badger or a Doormat? – how to be a leader that gets results”.

I also thought of Derrick Murray, of Eridani Consulting Ltd.  Derrick’s company is newly formed, after Derrick left his previous senior IT leadership role as Global Process Owner with a company in the reinsurance industry.  Here I also need to declare an interest – I interviewed Derrick when he was short-listed for a leadership role in my client organisation in 2003, and I have watched his progress in this organisation closely.  Derrick and I have already spoken about the possibility of working together to leverage our shared skills to develop leaders in IT.

Dear all

thank you very much for the valuable information and I apologize for the delay in replying. it's a quite hectic period.

I will reach out to all the suggested people/organizations.

I'm based in Brindisi, Italy where one of UN ICC offices is located. The project is for one of our customer organizations and is meant for future Chiefs (not a single person) worldwide located. So the scope of the TNA is more at Department level than at personal level.
