Five steps to e-learning engagement – how to get more clicks

We’d all love to think that once we had sourced or designed our e-learning and put it in place for staff that they would diligently work through the modules, expanding their skills and knowledge until the course was complete. Sadly, this is a rare occurrence and most e-learning doesn’t receive the engagement or enthusiasm we had hoped.

Don’t despair, there are a few very simple things we can look at to improve engagement with our learning initiatives and encourage more clicks on e-learning courses.

All too often staff can’t find a resource they need due to poor search functionality.

1) Improve search
Making your content easily found in search is fundamental to successful learning initiatives. All too often staff can’t find a resource they need due to poor search functionality.

Improving your course search function may be easier than you think! Check through your resources to see if they are logically categorised and tagged with appropriate keywords. It’s good to think about what your staff may be searching for, which job roles or departments require which resources and what challenge a member of staff may be facing when searching for learning content.

2) Easy navigation
One of the top barriers to learning remains ease of access and this could be as simple as too many clicks to access courses. Take a look at how learners navigate your system, can you streamline the journey, can you reduce the clicks?

Reducing the clicks and ensuring your systems navigation is intuitive can help to increase engagement with e-learning. Ensure that learners can easily access courses on various devices, that buttons or ‘tap targets’ on mobile devices are large enough and highly visible. If you’re talking about a course on your LMS, email or intranet, provide a link to it!

Big brands use recommendations to increase engagement and sales. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world and their recommendations system creates continuous access to content that is relevant to users.

By providing a system to manage playlists and recommended topics you can create a learning journey for your staff that encourages engagement and provides them with relevant training resources.

Recommendations can be based on job roles, departments or activity within the system, they can also be responsive to changing business priorities and events.

4) Expand points-of-contact
What methods and tools do you use to communicate with staff? Perhaps you send emails or other written communications, or have access to a social tool like Slack or Yammer? You may be one of the few in HR or L&D that understand the importance of having a wide range of points-of-contact with staff, but for most the communications are limited to one or two means of connecting.

Identifying gaps in your points-of-contact and assessing whether it is practical to implement a strategy to fill those gaps could be a great help in increasing staff engagement with learning initiatives.

The points-of-contact available to you may range from face-to-face contact, emails, intranet, social networks digital displays or workplace posters and message boards.

5) Use personalised messaging
Your staff are bombarded with messages both internal and external, making it hard to see through the noise of everyday communications. A good way to be heard is to personalise your messaging and make it highly relevant to the recipient.

Sending a blanket email or newsletter across departments that touches on various topics that are not all relevant to everyone can dilute your message.

There are some great tools to help you segment your lists and target by departments, by job roles or by previous engagement with learning resources. Marketing automation tools can be very relevant here and have significantly more functionality than your work email so it’s worth checking out some free software options to help you in sending out more engaging promotional emails, content recommendations or drip feed content.
